Welcome to AP, U.S. Government & Politics
*Students - please check your Google Classroom Page for ASSIGNMENTS, DUE DATES, and other important classroom information. I will NOT be posting those things here!
Google Class Code: jgje0k (the 0 is the number zero - no letter O)
*You need to add yourself to the class by AUG 2 - this will be a grade.
- Directions: go to Google Chrome - log in, go to the "dots" in the upper right, and click on Google Classroom (or just Google, Google classroom) - go to ADD A CLASS, then type in the class code!
- ONE - 3-ring binder (1.5 inch) / with filler paper / college or wide ruled
- pen / pencils - for work in class - to take notes, etc. You need something to write with!
- highlighters - at least 3 colors for peer editing, note taking, test prep!
- a set of markers / colored pencils - for projects (you won't need these every day!)
- access to a computer or other device for typing papers and research!
Any student who would like to bring in some extra supplies for the classroom - it would be much appreciated - we can always use tissues, hand sanitizer, Clorox wipes, extra pencils and loose leaf paper - these things seem to fly out of the room!
Text for AP GOPO: Wolfford, David. United States Government and Politics: Amsco, 2019.
- Cost: $18.95 - or $24.95 if you want the print and e-text bundle (a nice option, that would prevent students from having to lug the book back and forth to school!)
- ALL STUDENTS MUST HAVE A PRINT COPY for annotations and highlighting!
- Make sure you get the 2019 version - older version won't match the revised AP curriculum!
- Available from publisher - at the following link: https://www.perfectionlearning.com/social-studies/advanced-placement/united-states-government-politics-ap-exam.html
GOAL - Have the book by the 2nd week of class! We can supplement - but the sooner you can get the book the better!
I would order early - last year we had some "back-order" issues! Students will need a book to be successful in the class!
The book is available via Amazon (but is MUCH more expensive) - I could NOT find the current 2019 version at Barnes and Noble!
AP Government and Politics: Course Description
AP U.S. Government and Politics provides a college-level, nonpartisan introduction to key political concepts, ideas, institutions, policies, interactions, roles, and behaviors that characterize the constitutional system and political culture of the United States. Students will study U.S. foundational documents, Supreme Court decisions, and other texts and visuals to gain an understanding of the relationships and interactions among political institutions, processes, and behavior. They will also engage in disciplinary practices that require them to read and interpret data, make comparisons and applications, and develop evidence-based arguments. In addition, they will complete a political science research or applied civics project.
COURSE UNITS The AP U.S. Government and Politics course is organized around five units, which focus on major topics in U.S. government and politics. The units are:
■ Foundations of American Democracy
■ Interaction Among Branches of Government
■ Civil Liberties and Civil Rights
■ American Political Ideologies and Beliefs; and
■ Political Participation
*NOTE - we will do all the units, but not necessarily in this order!
Foundational documents and Supreme Court cases are an integral part of the course and necessary for students to understand the philosophical underpinnings, significant legal precedents, and political values of the U.S. political system and may serve as the focus of AP Exam questions. The course requires study of:
■ 9 foundational documents, including the U.S. Constitution
■ 15 landmark Supreme Court cases
Test Date for A.P. Government and Politics U.S. this year is May 4th @ 8 A.M.
- Test fee was $94 for 2018 / I estimate that it will be the same or possibly slightly higher for 2019
- There is a $15 return test fee - thus if students order a test (say they want to take it), there is a fee to return the test
